Wine To The Face

For People Who Drink Wine - and Do Other Stuff Good Too

Costco......... best wine deals ever?

I have mixed feelings about buying wine at Costco. On one hand the prices are as low as they will ever be and there is a cross-section of wines from all over the world. On the other hand the people working there have no idea about the wines and the selection is the most widely ditributed bottles in the US. Because the bottles can be found at any retail outlet they tend to be wines that are extemely predictable. An 18 dollar bottle of Beringer Reserve has blasts of flavor, but nothing unusual that will introduce you to new styles of wine.

Buying wine at Costco is like going to Hooters. It's predictable and cheap and there is no sport. Instead, support your local strip club. You'll have more fun discussing whether you want a spicey big hipped brunette or a sprite blond or a lean satin haired import. Once you've made your decision, you may be a bit anxious at first that the few extra bucks you spent wasn't worth it. You may find yourself asking, "did I get taken for a ride?", "is this just another saleswoman pushing and practicing her cheap marketing scheme?" But, with experience, you'll find the unknowing more intoxicating, involved, personal. A good local wine store is like a good local stip club, with every new bottle you get, and the more you let that bottle open up, the more you'll find those gems that are truly worth fostering and growing your community of wine merchants. Seek the truth, and be ready to pay for it.

Will, do you let things 'open up' when you go to hooters?
